A few examples:

A few years ago, a shipper in southern Minnesota had 6 cases of CDs and some training materials on July 2 that had to get to a training meeting in Redding, CA on July 4.  On a pallet, these training packages were over 100lbs total and no one would guarantee it on time.  They had called everyone.  One of my direct shippers heard about it and recommended they call me to see if I was available.  I was.  I told them I could easily get it there on the 4th of July, but I would have to do it in a rental car so there would be no Hours of Service restrictions.  I told them I would do it for $2,500 up front (since they were a new customer and I couldn’t run a credit check on them quickly enough). They agreed.  When I got there, they gave me a check for it and pointed to 6 small boxes on a pallet.  They told me the closest quote that they had to mine was $6,000 from FedEx Custom Critical and they wouldn't guarantee it on 7/4 based on a holiday also falling on that day. We laughed.  I got it there the morning of 7/4 averaging 67mph (110km/hr.) at 38mpg in a rented Ford Focus, then flew home.  I saved them $3,500 and gave them better service than they could've gotten from anywhere else.

I received a call on Tuesday just before lunchtime to take equipment from Minneapolis to medical facilities in Abilene and Austin, TX. I delivered Abilene at 6:15am on Wednesday and Austin at 10am; then brought back the faulty equipment to Minneapolis on Thursday morning in a Kia Soul (48”Lx40”Wx28”H @ 500lbs. capacity).

I recently flew to NYC to rent a car (SUV) and transport a service animal back to Minneapolis for one of our Veterans returning from Afghanistan.

I flew to Dover, DE during the height of the “pandemic” to pick up a truck for a building contractor and delivered it to him in Denver and then flew home, since he couldn’t find anyone else willing to do it.
